If I had spent half as much time using less "perfect" wood, and more time using what was in front of me, at the least I would've wasted less expensive lumber, haha. And it's more fun, less stressful.

Thanks!Jasonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06740185043053833321noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3324046123100137801.post-17943411410583429042015-07-31T12:02:14.388-07:002015-07-31T12:02:14.388-07:00Actually, nothing so fancy as that, as I figured t...Actually, nothing so fancy as that, as I figured that the spreading tendencies of a dovetail could induce the joint to split. I used a humble bridle joint, pinned for good measure.
That the awning has any beauty at all is due to the simple act of planing the wood. To think that I used to think store bought lumber was smooth.....now it seems horribly crude, haha.

ThanksJasonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06740185043053833321noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3324046123100137801.post-12644805755188801952015-07-27T08:38:10.101-07:002015-07-27T08:38:10.101-07:00Nice! Plus, sooo much free pine and birch and oak. Nice job on the awning frames as well, I need to learn how to make stuff like that soon.Stevehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02111684165340980176noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3324046123100137801.post-50604960253314516032015-07-26T08:31:41.352-07:002015-07-26T08:31:41.352-07:00The froe was a going away present from my great fr...The froe was a going away present from my great friend Brandon, back on the Oregon coast. He needs to pare his tool collection down to a minimum, as he is very soon to set sail to distant shores, in his now beautiful Columbia 43 "Hagoth". Wait till you see what he is sending me next!

Actually using the froe on the Ohia, that's not so much fun, as the grain is typically both spiral AND rowed AND interlocked, haha. Heavy as hell, too. These attributes give it great strength, but also the deservedly mixed reputation for being unstable in service. Too bad, because it sure would make awesome shingles! The Ohia is valued here culturally, but people are often clearing the land and want it gone, so it is often available for free on Craigslist. Stupid Haoles......Jasonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06740185043053833321noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3324046123100137801.post-84133046542083602962015-07-26T08:21:27.914-07:002015-07-26T08:21:27.914-07:00Ohhhhh, the feeling is mutual my friend! I had eve...Ohhhhh, the feeling is mutual my friend! I had every intention of doing the joint right away, but then it rained....then I was building something.....then it was raining.....haha. Procrastination buries me!

I am glad you waited for me as well, because this simple seeming joint actually taught me much, and made me think hard about the requirements for achieving a solid 90* angle. How much bearing surface is required? Would grain compression caused by the small surface contact of this joint to the vertical post allow the joint to become loose too soon? I examined the true, real-life application for this joint, as just a simple means for bridging two vertical posts, this joint is perfect with only a minimum of bearing surface. This joint is only intended to add rigidity, not be a primary means of attachment. I had to examine the context to understand this.

I also learned that wet Ohia is not to be feared, and actually cuts quite nicely.....if you use an awesome saw! Thank you so much for my "sword" (as my daughter calls it)!
Jasonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06740185043053833321noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3324046123100137801.post-11441693572805346942015-07-26T08:04:10.566-07:002015-07-26T08:04:10.566-07:00Yes, really excellent! TM" bevel gauge, next I'll get it to cut my toast and flip my eggs in the morning, really had me laughing.

It looks like the shed awning turned out great. There is so much crappy shit in this world, even a small effort to make something quality really stands out.

Your froe has class, much more character than mine. I know it can take a surprising amount of time to work with the rough lumber, splitting wood is just endlessly fascinating, especially wood you've never worked with before.Gabe D.https://www.blogger.com/profile/05809883477919665827noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3324046123100137801.post-72040897249718095232015-07-26T07:11:17.456-07:002015-07-26T07:11:17.456-07:00man, that paring block/wedge is genius!
I really ...man, that paring block/wedge is genius!

I really can see building something dismountable with this joint, and really really like the rough wood look it has, all the finesse hidden inside the joint. Tea ceremony approved. It was really good to wait for you. Sebastian Gonzalezhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04217512990715648095noreply@blogger.com
