Rainy day projects.....a good day for rust.

 

 

This is getting to be a common theme I know, but......it's raining again.

 

The rain comes down here, nearly every day, but the last few hours have been heavier than the daily norm. It must be due to the tropical storm that just curved around to the south of us and though this isn't a direct hit, it still is dumping out.

 

The ever present humidity here on the east side of Hawaii is a killer on tools. I am continually presented with reminders to take better care of my tools, ironic, as so many of them came to me in somewhat neglected and rusty condition. The tools that see regular use aren't much problem. After use, they get a quick trip to the stones for a brief hone, then a good wipe with the macadamia nut oil that I've been using for rust prevention. The problem is storage. Put the tools in a box for a week and.....

 

I might as well put this humidity to good use. A good thick film of oil is the best prevention that I've got right now and a rust blackened finish is ideal for holding oil. Rather than watching stuff rust for all the wrong reasons, I might take advantage of the situation instead.

 

 

A little bit ago, Sebastian sent me a wonderful tsuki-nomi, knowing how valuable it would be for my impending journey into timber frame construction. The big 48mm nomi that he sent is the uppermost big guy, right under the iPhone.

 

The tsuki-nomi is great....really, really nice, but it wants to rust at the drop of a hat. The original forged black finish has worn away through the years, most notably in the areas where you anchor the blade using your left hand as a pivot.

I've written about rust blackening steel tools before, but repetition is something I'm good at (just ask my family, haha). Mostly, I just want to show off Sebastian's giant chisel!

 

 

Before I begin, I try to do something to protect any edges or surfaces that I don't want to rust. I used some good Tyvek tape to cover the bevel and back of the blade. Make no mistake, this is REAL rusting here, although it is shallow and doesn't cause pitting or anything.

 

I put a spoonful of regular salt in a glass or plastic container, then add some hydrogen peroxide.

 

Mix it up, wipe it on and let it rust.....Then boil to convert the red rust into black iron oxide. It's simple, satisfying magic. Or basic chemistry, take your pick.

 

The exact measures don't matter. The hydrogen peroxide will only dissolve so much (unless you use heat...then you can form a supersaturated solution, but I find its not worth the extra work), but the extra salt wont cause any trouble.

 

 




The only real rule for rust blackening steel is....cleanliness. Wash, degrease, wash again, and then maybe degrease again, it isn't too much work. I sometimes get better adhesion of the rust film if I first give the tools a short soak in a phosphoric acid wash. This gets into the tiniest pockets of rust and also seems to "activate" the surface of the metal.


This chisel was a bit of a bear and didn't want to hold the blackening very well along the upper ridges on the blade, nor along the shaft. When that happens, I wash some more, using good dish soap and some steel wool to micro abrade the surface. Then......the trick. I use the cheap chemical blackening agent, Birchwood-casey Super-blue. If you've ever used the stuff, you know that it might make the steel black, but it will also INSTANTLY rust. The combo of rust-bluing and Super-blue, a match made in heaven. I forgot to take a picture....sorry.

 

So Birchwood-casey, then more rusting/boiling will eventually build up a nice even coat of black oxide, so much so that the salt/peroxide solution stops rusting the metal. Then, with the metal still hot from the pot, dry it off and wipe on as much oil as it will take.


 

 

The cycles of caustic chemicals and boiling water are tough on the tape. It's better than nothing though. Now I need to sharpen this beast and put it to work.

She just came in from the rain, looking all surly and mean, and figured it was time to put a good edge on the arrow that Brandon sent her. She's working on a chunk of Boiler Bay sandstone that we brought over from Oregon. Good girl.....she favors the natural stones.

 

 

Earlier that morning (it was sunny and hot until noon), I took this picture of a little canal that we drive over every day. Usually it is completely dry, but it's been raining a lot recently.

 

 

 

Later in the day, after only two hours of heavy rain.....

 

Yikes!

 

They issue flash flood warnings for this part of the island, when it rains heavy like this. Only 4 miles away, it hadn't rained at all. It is the deterioration of this exact drainage channel (and loads of irresponsible development) off of South Kulani road, that leads to notable occasions like this one in 2008, a few miles away, at the intersection of 39th and Pohaku.

 

 

We sure are glad that our realtor steered us away from that particular property, haha. See the guys in kayaks?

 

 

 

 

These rainy days are also good for other ongoing projects. I'm still working on a couple of different saws, slowly learning the art of "hizumi", which I understand as the straightening or massaging of tired and bent saw blades. This particular saw feels like a lost cause however, the rusty little ripsaw kataba/Hawaiian find.

 

 

The frustration of this is that at a number of different points I've gotten the blade very close to being good, but then I go a little too far and....damn. The mess really started after I got the blade straightened on the anvil, but then tried some light adjustment on a wooden block.

 

It's amazing how different it can be, the same steel, but using two different work surfaces. In a series of saw sharpening videos I watched, the presenter talks of preferring a mild steel block for certain procedures, as it "gives" more than the anvil. I would like to try that myself. I also need to polish up a nice block of this hard Ohia. It should make an excellent wooden anvil.

 

 

 

As I've been working this blade, I've been treating it as very much the learning experience, making the blade remarkably distorted, then bringing it back to (nearly) normal. These pictures show a couple different potato chip iterations.

 

The difficulty with this particular blade lies in the softness of the steel. The temper is just too soft, and the blade grows ever more distorted as I work on it. The steel is just too soft to make a good saw and when I bend the blade into an arc shape, on release it still retains some of the bend. That's not good.

 

 

 

I've learned some, but there is still a lifetimes worth of experience to be gained, many in fact. One of the greatest difficulties lies in finding someone to teach this stuff. Mark Grable has been very, very helpful in sharing his experience, but he's half a world away. I need something to to compare my efforts to.

 

Two weeks ago, this lot of dozuki and kataba saws came up on Yahoo Japan auction.

 

 

The detail photos showed that the saws looked to be old, but high quality. Some of them are missing a few teeth, but that's not my focus here. What really interested me was that there is ample evidence of the saws having seen the attention of a metate, some of the blades being dimpled as the surface of a pond. My thought is that if I examine these saws carefully, I might actually be able to learn something myself.

Hammer head..... How I battle the forces of inertia!



The new/old kanna has one aspect that I am not thrilled about.

Just about every kanna that I've bought has had this condition to one degree or another. When you are a carpenter, you don't carry some special little frou-frou brass hammer for adjusting your plane, you use what's in your hand! That's a steel hammer, ergo.... Hammer head, the mushroomed-over top on the blade. Plastic deformation of metal sounds a bit wordy.


Compounding the choice in kanna blade adjustment devices is the material that the kanna blade is made from. The tool that I want (and sometimes actual get, haha!) is a higher quality plane, and they usually have blades made from wrought iron.

Wrought iron is a great material for kanna blades, because it is soft, so it sharpens easily. Being soft also means that performing ura-dashi (tapping out) on a blade made with wrought iron is MUCH easier, than on a blade made from regular modern soft iron. Ren-tetsu, good for kanna (but not for chisels, maybe).

Wrought iron being soft, and easily deformed, causes the head to smoosh and fold over. I wish that this didn't bother me, as this whole "make pretty" thing is rather silly. This tool works great, as it is. It doesn't need to be pretty. Almost as bad (To me... I'm crazy!) is the way a blade looks when you grind off the folded over part. Then you are left with a misshapen blade, outlined in bright, shiny metal. It draws the eye.



So, I try to hammer the heads back into shape.


Polished tools help. The hammer gets a bit of assistance from an old cold chisel, reshaped and polished. I found it on the side of the road. The idea is to apply force, opposite to what caused the deformation in the first place. The chisel gets underneath, where the hammer won't fit.

Even though the wrought iron is soft, there is only so much that it will tolerate. It would be nice if we could apply heat, but that would draw the temper, ruining the edge holding ability.

The iron may tear, but hopefully it will be a net gain, overall.

Not as nice from the top. Here you can see that the iron has exceeded its threshold of resiliency. Much of this will still need to be filed away. You do what you can.




After filing the nasty parts away, I etch the blade with ferric chloride (PCB etchant), just to get a better look at the grain of the wrought iron.


I love this stuff! Each blade is different, and so beautiful.

The top gets planished to a faceted, hammer finish, then etched, to peek inside.


I didn't want to change the shape anymore than needed, so a little bit of the damage is still there. If I had just used a grinder to remove the distorted metal, I would be left with a flat-top, lopsided kanna blade. This hammering process can preserve much of the iron and come close to regaining the original profile. It does take work.



It isn't apparent from the photos, but the hammered surfaces are actually rather bright. I would like to tone that down, to blend in with the original finish, but this blade doesn't have much original finish, so.....


Birchwood-Casey Super-Blue, gun cold-process bluing liquid to the rescue. You can apply it to small areas, to blend, but the darks might not match. I obviously did everything in sight. Cold bluing is not very durable, and can fade within hours, weeks, whatever. Handling will accelerate the disappearance, but it's easy to reapply.



Something must be in the air today, but the super blue is actually turning blue (often it's black), and I don't really WANT blue, so.......

Diamonds are a carpenter's best friend

Looking at those horrible photos of my unfinished workbench kinda reminded me that I had intended to actually build some drawers for the thing. Which means that I've got a lot of stock to machine up (I am in no way a hand tool purist) , but before that happens, I've got a secret to tell. I have never replaced the planer blades in my old Delta planer.

And it shows, big time. Just like not washing the car until it turns green, I was able to put off buying new knives and enduring minor tear-out, for a long time. Then I bought a bunch of Port Orford Cedar (POC). This wood is beautiful and when perfectly planed, leaves a shimmering almost iridescent surface.

REALLY nice stuff, but rather prone to tear-out when planing. Old Blue/Gray could still handle mahogany (amazingly well after 20 years and possibly 1000ft linear with only minor honing) with no problem, but POC? No way. So this last winter, I took a few days and sharpened (hahahahah) the knives with very underwhelming results. Made a jig and and burned through about $10 in wet/dry paper and maybe ever made them more dull. Hard to tell.

So what's different this time? First of all, someone's watching (you) and secondly, I bought some diamond stones.

The first set is a cheap three set no name import special that I got at a local store for $7.95, but you can get them from Amazon for around $12 (2013) delivered. Oh yeah, 2x6 inches and slightly bowed along their length, very flat in width. Those little dot looking spots are actually holes in the metal plate that allow lubrication fluid and metal swarf to get out of the way.  The colored part is thin plastic. Not so good for chisels or things with pointy parts or small surfaces, though. All and all, they are rather durable, very aggressive at 150, 300 and 400 grits and I use them for lots of different things that would ruin my real stones.

Mount them on some blocks of wood and they flatten right out. Use a good quality spray adhesive like 3M super 77 (16 oz for $10-12) or 90(16 oz for $18). Kinda spendy for glue in a can, but you'll find plenty of uses for it. I can't find a good price with free shipping, so check locally. If you intend to use these stones for precision work like this (hahaha) you might want to check them for uniform thickness along their length and adjust accordingly. I am going to re-do this set, they work that good. A bargain at twice the price.

The second is an 8" DMT Duosharp that I got off Ebay for about $50. It is  a Fine/Extra-fine 600/1200, is also slightly bowed along it's length and flat in width. These little dots are hard plastic that is flush with the diamond coated surface. Still not too great for chisels, though. Really nice when you knock down the high spots (all diamond stones need to be broken in a bit), this stone is a lot more refined than the others. Heavy and stiff means that there is no easy way to flatten it and honestly, if I was paying retail, I would return it to see if the second one that they sent was REALLY as flat as they say it should be. As it was, it was a close decision as to whether or not I should just re-sell the thing, but after I used it for a bit, it grew on me. I guess that I like it well enough to consider spending  $100 on a diamond coated sliver of metal taped to a piece of aluminum (Tsuboman Atoma diamond flattening plate) , so make of it what you will. I hope that Amazon decides to carry them soon. I would love to try one out. One thing is certain, though. I will NEVER go back to wet/dry paper, I'll tell you that.

In the this photo, you can see the tripod stand that I made for planer knives. It's just a block of wood with a tight fitting slot that the blade slips into, attached to a stick about 10" long or so.

So as you can see, the jig merely holds the blade at a more or less constant angle that is adjusted by using a variety of spacers underneath the leg. Trial and error, with a bit of measurement, will get you what you need. I would lean more heavily towards the measurement side. You may also notice that the DMT stone sits on a piece of $store shelf liner, which is on a piece of 1/4" float glass, which also sits on more shelf liner. Now that I think about it, there is no reason for the glass really, is there. It must be some sort of permanent muscle memory kind of thing left over from my "Scary Sharp" days. And in case you were wondering, yes the liner material keeps things from sliding around, yes it does introduce slop and contributes towards inaccuracy, and no I am not missing the first joint of my thumb (yet). You can also see a couple of pieces of slate in the background that I use for polishing up the finished edge.

I'll write up a new and improved version one of these days, but for now this is pretty ghetto, but it works. Or you could just buy new ones. Knives, that is. Or a new planer, I suppose.
